On "SAY NOTHING" Joanna’s latest feature film directed by Keiran Darcyâ€Smith and shot partly in Cambodia she relished spending hours digging through enormous piles of second hand clothing at the local markets,
“So many of the local clothes had unusual patterns & textures and were perfect for expressing character attributes”.
What Joanna particularly loves about costuming is the process of understanding character. “It’s a really fine balance dressing an actor because you are both fleshing out character. It may be as simple as the way the character wears his sleeves or the length of his pants that can say just the right thing about him, it can be a really subtle, nuanced thing at times”.
She believes that character & story are inextricably linked and finding those right things to say about them in context to story whether it be a TV commercial or a feature film is such a joyful, creative & ultimately collaborative endeavor.
Joanna began her career studying production design at the AFTRS. She has worked on numerous TV commercials, photographic stills, short films, and feature films.
Her latest SAY NOTHING is a modern day drama about 4 friends who travel to Cambodia with only 3 returning.
Joanna also costume designed Julie Bertuccelli’s THE TREE starring Charlotte Gainsborough, which closed the Cannes Film Festival last year.
She also designed Luke Doolan’s short film CRYO and James Khehtie’s THE TELEGRAM MAN starring Jack Thompson.
Joanna has worked for numerous TVC production companies over the last few years including Prodigy, Flying Fish, Verve, The Feds, Plush, Gobstopper and The Director’s group.
Joanna also works as a stylist on stills shoots, working for a number of Australian photographers.
